Furniture design concept 2020

Role: Designer | Creator
The Unloved Chair is a representation of the heart, albeit in a more literal form, however I think this adds to the interest of the piece and opens it up to a wider colour palette. The name of the chair is very tongue in cheek, and refers to the materials it’s made from. Discarded items and remnants, which have been reclaimed to create something new and fun.
The Unloved Chair uses reclaimed materials (such as a chair I found discarded for my local hard rubbish collection) as well as fabric remnants that would otherwise have been thrown away to create an immersive experience.
Not only does the chair appear plush, soft and inviting to sit in because of the texture created by the fabric, but the expression of it aims to visually show the viewer that sitting in this chair is going to be something special.
As you sit down the fabric envelops you and almost seems to embrace you, as though it is giving you a wonderfully hug and the overall experience is one of being accepted as you settle into the chair, as well as a fleeting perception of love as the chair folds in around you.
As the fabric has been carefully hand-stitched onto the chair, it has been created to last and so will hopefully not end up contributing to landfill. This also means that the sculpture can be created with any discarded piece of furniture, and so could be made to order. Ideally a whole series of these could be created.
